Peter’s failure of Jesus Christ Mt 26:33-35 pp Mk 14:29-31; Lk 22:31-34; Jn 18:25-27

Peter!? Let’s begin with Peter...

But where? There is so much to choose from.

Acts 4:13 ESV
Now when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, and perceived that they were uneducated, common men, they were astonished. And they recognized that they had been with Jesus.
Acts 4:14 ESV
But seeing the man who was healed standing beside them, they had nothing to say in opposition.
Acts 4:15 ESV
But when they had commanded them to leave the council, they conferred with one another,
Acts 4:16 ESV
saying, “What shall we do with these men? For that a notable sign has been performed through them is evident to all the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and we cannot deny it.
Acts 4:17 ESV
But in order that it may spread no further among the people, let us warn them to speak no more to anyone in this name.”
Acts 4:18 ESV
So they called them and charged them not to speak or teach at all in the name of Jesus.
Acts 4:19 ESV
But Peter and John answered them, “Whether it is right in the sight of God to listen to you rather than to God, you must judge,
Acts 4:20 ESV
for we cannot but speak of what we have seen and heard.”
Acts 4:21 ESV
And when they had further threatened them, they let them go, finding no way to punish them, because of the people, for all were praising God for what had happened.
Acts 4:22 ESV
For the man on whom this sign of healing was performed was more than forty years old.

Peter was teachable

Failure, a great learning opportunity

Proverbs 24:16 ESV
for the righteous falls seven times and rises again, but the wicked stumble in times of calamity.
Psalm 37:23–24 HCSB
A man’s steps are established by the Lord, and He takes pleasure in his way. Though he falls, he will not be overwhelmed, because the Lord holds his hand.

Step 1: Think about success and failure differently

"I am not called to be successful, I am called to be faithful." —Mother Teresa

In 1948 Mother Teresa began the work for which the Missionaries of Charity have been known since. Her order received permission from Calcutta officials to use a portion of the abandoned temple to the goddess Kali, the Hindu goddess of death and destruction. Here Mother Teresa founded the Kalighat Home for the Dying. She and her fellow nuns began gathering dying Indians off the streets of Calcutta and brought them to this home to care for them during the days before they died. In 1974, Mark Hatfield was touring Calcutta with Mother Teresa and visited the "House of Dying." He saw sick children were being cared for, and the dispensary, where the poor line up by the hundreds to receive medical attention. Watching Mother Teresa minister to these people, feeding and nursing those left by others to die, Hatfield was overwhelmed by the sheer magnitude of the suffering she and her co-workers face daily. "How can you bear the load without being crushed by it?" He asked. Mother Teresa replied, "My dear Senator, I am not called to be successful, I am called to be faithful."

Step 2: View failure from God’s perspective...

Revelation 3:14 NRSV
“And to the angel of the church in Laodicea write: The words of the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the origin of God’s creation:
Revelation 3:15 NRSV
“I know your works; you are neither cold nor hot. I wish that you were either cold or hot.
Revelation 3:16 NRSV
So, because you are lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I am about to spit you out of my mouth.
Revelation 3:17 NRSV
For you say, ‘I am rich, I have prospered, and I need nothing.’ You do not realize that you are wretched, pitiable, poor, blind, and naked.
Revelation 3:18 NRSV
Therefore I counsel you to buy from me gold refined by fire so that you may be rich; and white robes to clothe you and to keep the shame of your nakedness from being seen; and salve to anoint your eyes so that you may see.
Revelation 3:19 NRSV
I reprove and discipline those whom I love. Be earnest, therefore, and repent.
Revelation 3:20 NRSV
Listen! I am standing at the door, knocking; if you hear my voice and open the door, I will come in to you and eat with you, and you with me.
Revelation 3:21 NRSV
To the one who conquers I will give a place with me on my throne, just as I myself conquered and sat down with my Father on his throne.
Revelation 3:22 NRSV
Let anyone who has an ear listen to what the Spirit is saying to the churches.”

Did you hear?

Finally, “To the one who overcomes...”

Revelation 2:7 NRSV
Let anyone who has an ear listen to what the Spirit is saying to the churches. To everyone who conquers, I will give permission to eat from the tree of life that is in the paradise of God.
Revelation 2:11 NRSV
Let anyone who has an ear listen to what the Spirit is saying to the churches. Whoever conquers will not be harmed by the second death.
Revelation 2:17 NRSV
Let anyone who has an ear listen to what the Spirit is saying to the churches. To everyone who conquers I will give some of the hidden manna, and I will give a white stone, and on the white stone is written a new name that no one knows except the one who receives it.
Revelation 2:26–27 NRSV
To everyone who conquers and continues to do my works to the end, I will give authority over the nations; to rule them with an iron rod, as when clay pots are shattered—
Revelation 3:5–6 NRSV
If you conquer, you will be clothed like them in white robes, and I will not blot your name out of the book of life; I will confess your name before my Father and before his angels. Let anyone who has an ear listen to what the Spirit is saying to the churches.
Revelation 3:12 NRSV
If you conquer, I will make you a pillar in the temple of my God; you will never go out of it. I will write on you the name of my God, and the name of the city of my God, the new Jerusalem that comes down from my God out of heaven, and my own new name.
Revelation 3:21–22 NRSV
To the one who conquers I will give a place with me on my throne, just as I myself conquered and sat down with my Father on his throne. Let anyone who has an ear listen to what the Spirit is saying to the churches.”
